Wisdom in places long forgotten and accessible through technology.

I love reading wisdom literature and as a young guy I studied the Protestant bible with intrigue and what would be considered enthralment. I come from a no religious family and had no clue about monotheistic religions. I would have been in my early twenties. Theses days I am more involved and fascinated with eastern religious and find their literature delightful. The Buddhist practitioners, especially monks, have said to me on many occasions, it’s about walking the path, westerners tend to over complicate things and especially me read too much. I just enjoy reading and thoroughly enjoy the Buddhist writings. My practice has progressed as well, in terms of more peaceful meditation and less obsessive behaviour. Traditionally, I can become very obsessed with new things and far too self absorbed in them.

Me recent discover is Pali canon.

The Tipitaka (Pali ti, “three,” + pitaka, “baskets”), or Pali canon, is the collection of primary Pali language texts which form the doctrinal foundation of Theravada Buddhism. The Tipitaka and the paracanonical Pali texts(commentaries, chronicles, etc.) together constitute the complete body of classical Theravada texts.

Clearly, this Pali canon huge and not all in English and basically would take a life time to read. I just find gems like the one below.

An ancient path rediscovered

“It is just as if a man, traveling along a wilderness track, were to see an ancient path, an ancient road, traveled by people of former times. He would follow it. Following it, he would see an ancient city, an ancient capital inhabited by people of former times, complete with parks, groves, & ponds, walled, delightful. He would go to address the king or the king’s minister, saying, ‘Sire, you should know that while traveling along a wilderness track I saw an ancient path… I followed it… I saw an ancient city, an ancient capital… complete with parks, groves, & ponds, walled, delightful. Sire, rebuild that city!’ The king or king’s minister would rebuild the city, so that at a later date the city would become powerful, rich, & well-populated, fully grown & prosperous.

“In the same way I saw an ancient path, an ancient road, traveled by the Rightly Self-awakened Ones of former times. And what is that ancient path, that ancient road, traveled by the Rightly Self-awakened Ones of former times? Just this noble eightfold path: right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration… I followed that path. Following it, I came to direct knowledge of birth… becoming… clinging… craving… feeling… contact… the six sense media… name-&-form… consciousness, direct knowledge of the origination of consciousness, direct knowledge of the cessation of consciousness, direct knowledge of the path leading to the cessation of consciousness. I followed that path.

“Following it, I came to direct knowledge of fabrications, direct knowledge of the origination of fabrications, direct knowledge of the cessation of fabrications, direct knowledge of the path leading to the cessation of fabrications. Knowing that directly, I have revealed it to monks, nuns, male lay followers & female lay followers, so that this holy life has become powerful, rich, detailed, well-populated, wide-spread, proclaimed among celestial & human beings.”

In our society people are more involved in establishing new courses in terms of wealth and creativity. Nothing wrong with progressive thinking. I wish to consider what the world would be like if people used ” Noble Eight Fold Path” as their baseline for business, and personal life. How much of a difference this would make to all our lives. Corruption and misuse of precious resources would end. Animals would get a respite from human exploitation and the poor and marginalised would experience genuine help.

Utopian I know, however, as independent, free thinkers we can gain much wisdom from this “ancient path” it’s not hard to understand that the planet is in crises and unless we as individuals make good choices based on wholesome lifestyles. It is never going to improve and sadly future generations are in for a sorry existence.
